Leyendo los escritos de Sudbury Valley he observado que aparte de la mezcla de edades, la escuela Sudbury Valley tiene “en su valija” otra arma secreta que casi no se le menciona, y que tiene un efecto positivo decisivo sobre el carácter, el ambiente, el funcionamiento y la organización de la escuela: “No hay plazas fijas en Sudbury Valley. Cada año, en la primavera, se realizan elecciones para el ‘equipo’ (los “maestros”) del año siguiente.Quién quiera servir debe apuntar su nombre en la lista de los candidatos. La asamblea de la escuela debate ampliamente las necesidades de ‘equipo’, y discute cada uno de los candidatos por turno. El día de las elecciones, cada uno en la escuela tiene la oportunidad de votar. El voto es secreto. Esto nos mantiene a todos nosotros listos y dispuestos. En ocasiones, alguien no es elegido. Frecuentemente son elegidos nuevos candidatos. Sangre vieja y sangre nueva se mezcla bien en el ‘equipo’.

SCHOOLED ~THE FILM

What happend to the person you were going to be?

Preview for the new indie film SCHOOLED, an earthy character study about a teacher in crisis who discovers a democratic school that teaches him to connect with kids as people.

Schooled it’s a serious character study about a high school teacher who pulls himself out of a life crisis when he spends some time hanging around a Sudbury model school.

And I know all this because I wrote and directed the film.

I was deeply influenced by the Sudbury Press books and audio lectures (some I’ve listened to dozens of times), and influenced by the work of A.S. Neill, Wilhelm Reich and several other intense thinkers on personal growth.

The community at Cedarwood Sudbury School very graciously let the lead actor and I hang out there for a day, and that experience directly informed the JC meeting in the movie. An alumni from Fairhaven named Ben Umstead was a HUGE part of our production behind-the-scenes and on-screen for several scenes. There is a staff member from the Summerhill-inspired Play Mountain Place in the film too.
